Good personal breakdown cover

I purchased the Personal Breakdown Cover with Nationwide Recovery a few weeks ago. The process on the website was straightforward, I just followed the steps and entered my details. Confirmation came through almost immediately after payment, which was reassuring. I haven't had to use the recovery service yet, thankfully, but understanding the coverage limits and what's included was clear during the sign-up. The digital membership card was easy to access. I did have a quick question about the Home Start option, so I used their online chat. The agent was helpful, answered my query about when exactly Home Start kicks in, and resolved it within a few minutes. Overall, a good experience so far.

Decent cover, small issue

I renewed my Joint Breakdown Cover last month. The renewal process itself was mostly smooth online, just a few clicks. I think the price is fair for the level of cover, especially compared to some competitors. However, I did notice the website was a bit slow to load on one page during the payment step, which was a little annoying. I've used their Roadside Assistance once before and they were pretty quick to respond, about 45 minutes for a flat tire. So the service is good when you need it. Just that one small hiccup on the website.

So easy to get cover!

I just got the Family Breakdown Cover and it was super easy! The website was clear, no confusing stuff. I got my confirmation email right away. I feel much better knowing my family is covered. I'll definitely be recommending GEM Motoring Assist to all my friends. So glad I found them!

Is European breakdown cover included by default or do you have to add it on separately?

I Ivy A. 3 weeks ago
It's usually an add-on. The basic policies are UK only. Definitely check the policy details if you're planning a trip abroad.

Nah, it's extra. Most providers charge for European cover. Make sure you select it specifically if you need it.

What's the deal with Recovery EXTRA vs Recovery RECLAIM? I'm trying to figure out which one I need.

O Omar 3 weeks ago
Recovery EXTRA is when they sort everything for you on the spot, recovery to a garage etc. RECLAIM means you pay for the recovery yourself and they reimburse you later. EXTRA is usually better for peace of mind.

Basically, EXTRA is full service recovery, they handle it. RECLAIM is more like an insurance policy where you pay upfront and get your money back later. Depends if you want the hassle or not.

Hey, wondering if GEM Motoring Assist has any kind of discount for NHS staff? My wife works for them and we're looking to switch breakdown providers.

B Beth Walsh 3 weeks ago
Yeah, they totally do! My mate got like 15% off with his Blue Light Card, which includes NHS. Definitely worth checking out.

I saw something about it on their site actually. Not a huge discount but every little helps, right? Just look for the Blue Light info.

Can I use a discount code if I'm renewing my membership? Or are those just for new customers?

R Ryan Vargas 3 weeks ago
Most of the really good discount codes are for new members, but sometimes they have specific 'renewal offers' you can get if you look out for them. Not always a code though, sometimes it's just applied.

I tried to use a new member code on my renewal once and it didn't work. Had to call them and they gave me a small loyalty discount instead.

If I get a discount for being over 60, can I also combine it with a Blue Light discount? Or just one deal at a time?

C Cody A. 4 weeks ago
Usually, with most companies, you can only use one discount code or offer at a time. I'd go for whichever one gives you the biggest saving.

Probably just one. Most places don't let you stack discounts, especially if they're percentage-based. Worth trying both to see which is better though!
